Karnataka Style Sooji /Semolina Upma

Upma is one of the simplest and quickest form of breakfast or teatime dish . They are healthy dish popular mostly in Karnataka region. Upma usually can be prepared​ with Sooji( Rawalpindi or semolina), bread or oats. Here comes a simple but yummiest version which can be prepared easily and so quickly.

INGREDIENTS FOR PREPARATION
  1. Rawa/Sooji/Semolina: 2 cup
  2. Onion: 1
  3. Green chilly: 2
  4. Ginger: 1 inch
  5. Garam masala powder: 3/4 tsp
  6. Asafoetida: 1/4 tsp
  7. Fenugreek seed: 1/2 tsp
  8. Mustard seeds: 1 tsp
  9. Chana dal: 1 tsp
  10. Dry red chilly: 2
  11. Oil: 2 tbs
  12. Curry leaves: 3-4 strings
  13. Salt: to taste
  14. Water: 4 cups
  15. Grated coconut: 1-2 tbs(garnishing)
METHOD OF PREPARATION
  • Roast rawa for 5-10 minutes or till it turns to light golden color. Here I used wheat rawa for preparing upma.
  • Allow water to boil in a pan.
  • Take another pan and boil oil in it.
  • Sputter mustard seeds and fenu Greek seeds in it.
  • Now add chana dal and roast for 1-2 minutes. Then add dry red chilly and saute for a while.
  • Now add ginger , green chilly and curry leaves and saute for 2 minutes.
  • Now add onion and saute till it turns soft.
  • Add in masala powder to it.
  • We can also use vegetables like cooked green peas, carrot to it if we loved. If you are adding , add it now.
  • Now add boiling water and salt to it.
  • Allow the water to boil completely.
  • Now add roasted rawa or sooji little by little by stirring to avoid lump formation.
  • Keep stirring till it thickens and about to done.
  • Now close the lid cook for 1-2 minutes.
  • Open and stir well. Also add grated coconut and fold well to get mixed.
  • Remove from flame and serve hot with a cup of tea or coffee.
Delicious Sooji or semolina upma in yummy Karnataka flavour is ready . Serve hot.
